The future of care is here: empowering clinicians with AI-enabled technology

Kendra Onsgard, CNO

As Chief Nursing Officer, I’ve long been driven by a singular mission: to provide the highest quality care to our patients while simultaneously empowering our exceptional clinical team. In Home Health and Hospice our clinicians are the heart and soul of our organization, bringing comfort, expertise and compassion directly into the homes of those who need it most. Yet, I've seen firsthand the increasing administrative burden that often detracts from their ability to truly focus on what matters most – the patient.

We are on the precipice of  a pivotal shift in how we empower our clinical team: the integration of cutting-edge AI-enabled documentation technology. This isn't just a new tool; it's a revolution designed to enhance patient outcomes and nurture clinician well-being.

The demands on home health care clinicians are unique. They navigate diverse home environments, manage complex patient needs and perform intricate assessments, all while being responsible for meticulous documentation that is crucial for patient safety, accurate billing and demonstrating the effectiveness of our care. However, the time spent on administrative tasks often means less time for direct patient interaction, therapeutic conversations, and proactive problem-solving.

AI-enabled documentation technology directly addresses this challenge. By intelligently capturing and capturing clinical conversations during patient visits, it offers a transformative solution that allows our clinicians to stay present and engaged with their patients, rather than dividing their attention between assessment and data entry.

Our primary goal with this integration is clear: to empower our clinicians to focus more on patient interaction and less on the administrative burden of documentation. We envision a future where:

Clinical Excellence Flourishes: By offloading the documentation burden, our clinicians will have more mental space and precious time to dedicate to patient assessment, education, and emotional support. This will lead to more holistic, person-centered care.

Documentation Becomes a Seamless Byproduct of Care: The AI technology will transform documentation from a post-visit chore into an intuitive, real-time capture of the care delivered. This means more accurate, comprehensive and timely records, reducing errors and ensuring continuity of care.

Data-Driven Insights Improve Outcomes: With richer, more granular data captured effortlessly, we can gain new insights into patient care patterns, identify areas for improvement, and ultimately elevate our quality of care across the board.

Our Clinicians Thrive: This technology is explicitly designed to reduce burnout and improve job satisfaction. By giving our clinical team back valuable time and alleviating a significant source of stress, we are investing in their well-being and ensuring they can continue to provide exceptional care for years to come.

AI-enabled care is a foundational shift. It’s how we move beyond documentation burden and return time, presence, and purpose back to the bedside—where clinicians can practice at the top of their license and patients receive more connected, consistent care.

And it’s how we expand our reach—serving more patients with the compassion and excellence that defines our profession.

Significant Time Savings: Freeing up countless hours previously spent on manual documentation, allowing clinicians to focus on direct patient care, education and building stronger patient relationships.

Improved Documentation Quality and Completeness: Automatic capture of detailed clinical interactions will lead to more accurate, robust and compliant documentation, reducing the risk of errors and improving data for quality initiatives.

Enhanced Clinician Satisfaction and Retention: By reducing administrative burden and allowing clinicians to practice at the top of their license, we expect to see a significant boost in job satisfaction, reduced burnout and improved clinician retention.

Greater Consistency in Care Delivery: By reinforcing clinical best practices through our “Assessing Out Loud" strategy and leveraging AI to capture these consistently, we will ensure a higher standard of care across all visits.

The future of care in the home

This is more than a technology investment—it’s a commitment to our clinicians and the future of care delivery.

By integrating AI-enabled documentation into our practice, we are intentionally redesigning the care experience—one that prioritizes presence over paperwork, connection over compliance burden, and sustainability over strain. We are giving time back to our clinicians, so they can bring their full expertise, compassion and focus to every patient interaction.

For our patients and families, this means more attentive, personalized care. For our clinicians, it means a more balanced, fulfilling way to practice. And for our organization, it positions us to lead with innovation, scale with purpose and continue advancing care in the home.

The future of care isn’t coming—it’s already here. And it’s one where technology elevates, not replaces, the human connection at the heart of everything we do.
